End-of-Year Update from the Parent Committee

Dear VWS Community,

What an incredible school year this has been. A lot has happened, from a special welcome-new-families morning coffee last September to an Earnest Ice Cream-packed Community Picnic in June. We have started the school year with a full Parent Committee body of 12 members and a subcommittee that worked hard to innovate with an outdoor edition of our dear Winter Fair. We hosted a Meet the Candidates online town hall ahead of our Annual General Meeting and board election and a Wine & Cheese reception for our Extraordinary General Meeting. Finally, we hosted the Spring Social and Community Picnic during a busy spring term.

We have learned a lot and plan to hold all those events next school year. The Winter Fair, which always requires strong community engagement, was especially challenging this year as we hosted it outdoors in anticipation of a Ministry of Education visit. The Spring Social, a relatively new event, is heading towards becoming a significant community celebration. In all fairness, we could have communicated better that our intention for the party was to use Community Funds to host a community celebration. The event was extremely well orchestrated and in a beautiful venue, with delicious catered food and memorable dance floor moves with DJ Mark Woodyard. I definitely look forward to next year’s edition!

Our morning coffees and hikes were not very popular this year, and we are still considering whether they should stay in the PAC calendar.

For the next school year, the Community Fund will continue to hold the revenue from the fundraising efforts led by the Parent Committee. The Grocery Card Program is our lead program, followed by monthly donations and events. In this same issue, you will see a letter from the Board of Trustees on efforts from the school to implement fundraising processes for the Endowment Fund, which differs from the Community Fund.

PAC will continue to lead and make decisions about using community funds according to our Framework and the school’s Fundraising Policy. The PAC is open to using community funds in other areas that serve the community, such as after-school clubs and activities. If you have a project you want to pitch to us to use community funds, write to us at vwspac@gmail.com. Please remember that an idea has to be accompanied by a willingness to lead the project you pitch to the fund!

Lastly, we recognize and thank all grades that worked hard to replenish their use of the community fund, with special kudos to Grades 12 and 6 for your creative and fun fundraisers!

I am stepping down as PAC chair and member for the next school year. Noelle Virtue will continue to be our Treasurer. Bindu Nambiar, Elmer Ventura, Jann Winters, Kate Muker, and Paula Jackson will hold the fort and welcome the new members. We are welcoming new members. Please write to vwspac@gmail.com if you are interested.

Have a wonderful summer, everyone!
